The Problem With United
How long will we be seeing this celebration ?
Multi-talented, multi-national, yes I know. Still, I couldn't help feeling that our squad is still lacking behind Arsenal and Chelsea. The only obvious reason wht we are ahead of Arsenal in the form table is because of the lack of character shown by Wenger's men since the defeat at Old Trafford.
I must praise Fergie's abilities to instill the grit, determination and fighting spirit into our multi-millionaire players. However, sheer determination and hard work alone do not guarantee any success. Talent, tactical mastery and depth in squad is a must. Lets take a look at Unted's aging midfield. From left to right , United's first choice are Giggs (31), Keane (33), Scholes (30) and Ronaldo (19). Lets now look back at our midfield during our treble season ; Giggs (26), Keane (28), Scholes (25) and Beckham (24)
Of the quartet who won the treble, 3 of them still features prominently in Fergie's plans. 6 years and Fergie is still depending on the same bunch of players to chase for honours. Season 2004-2005 is said to be a transition period for United. Players such as Djemba-Djemba (23), Ronaldo (19), Kleberson (25) and Miller (23) were brought in to replace the old guards.
Unfortunately, things didnt turn out successfully as it was hoped. Only Ronaldo, the youngest, managed to impress. Dubbed the new Luis Figo, Ronaldo is often critisied for his erratic step-overs than his wing wizardry and goal prowess. However, on quite a number of occasions this season and the season before, Ronaldo has been instrumental and inspirational in our attacks. At the age of 19, he has plenty of time to improve.
One step-over too many ?
In Brazil's victorious World Cup in Japan, they played a 5-2-3 formation, with 2 defensive midfielders in Gilberto Silva and Kleberson. While Gilberto is enjoying success at Arsenal, the same cant be said about Kleberson. Often caught out of position, frequently losing possesion and some erratic passing, Kleberson has only been limited to cameo appearances in the Carling Cup.
To replace Roy Keane of Cork, Fergie decided to go for another guy from Cork, Liam Miller. Miller was handed a few appearances at the early stages of the season but failed to impress the gaffer that he was the ready made replacement for Keane.
What now for United ? Will Giggs, Scholes and Keane be playing on until their 40s ?? Ideally, Steven Gerrard would be the man we should be targeting in the summer. But even if Liverpool were relegated, he would not come. Understandable, I guess. Without a strong and creative midfield, even the likes of Ruud, Rooney, Smith and Saha wouldnt be able to find the net so often.
After blowing our transfer kitty for next season with the purchase of chubby-horny-little-boy-next-door Wayne Rooney, Fergie has to be a bit thrifty in finding quality new recruits. But why blow 30M pounds on an 18 year old ? Perhaps after missing out on World Player of the Year Ronaldinho and soon-to-be PFA Player of the Year Arjen Robben, Fergie certainly cant afford to miss out on this one.
Often deployed in midfield, Rooney doesnt really add any spark to the attack except for the long range efforts which more often than not ends up in row 32 at stretford end.
Our defence, superbly marshalled by the most elegant defender in the world, Rio Ferdinand and our attack, led by Ruud van Nistelrooy, can match any team on this planet. However, with an aging midfield, the best United can expect is the FA Cup...again..if we beat Mid'sboro..haha
